Not long after the landmark first 5G broadcast transmission took place in the US, LG Electronics, together with the Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz Institute, have set the record for the longest distance data transmission over 6G.
6G, which according to the announcement, should provide data rates up to 50 times faster than 5G with just 10% of the latency, has been tested over the last several years by companies including LG and Samsung. The new milestone achieved by this latest test, however, smashes the previous record of 320 m (1,050 ft) by successfully transmitting data 500 m (1,640 ft).
The team behind the test says that the new distance milestone is particularly significant because it is the distance high-powered base stations are typically set up around urban areas. The results of this test indicate that real-word applications of the technology are feasible, with LG saying in their statement, “The recent test at LG Sciencepark is significant not only because LG increased the wireless transmission and reception distance to 500 meters – the standard distance for high-powered base stations in urban areas – but also because it verified the usability of 6G in various ‘real world’ communication scenarios, including building-to-building, building-to-ground terminal and ground-to-ground terminals. The company is now one step closer to commercializing 6G THz communications.”
