The Vegas Strip’s iconic Mirage Hotel is closing down

Reopening as Hard Rock Las Vegas in 2027 after a $1 billion acquisition

The Mirage Hotel and Casino announced that it will be shuttering its doors (and iconic volcano) after a 34 year run on the Las Vegas Strip. Opening in 1989, the Mirage paved the way for an influx of mega-resorts to populate the Strip in the 90’s. It was the home to Siegfried and Roy’s headlining show beginning in 1990, and its erupting volcano ensured that it was instantly recognizable on the Strip, even among other resorts competing for the Vegas skyline.

The Mirage was acquired by Hard Rock International in 2022 in a deal totaling over $1 billion, and has plans to transform the resort into Hard Rock Las Vegas, tentatively opening in 2027. The new property will reportedly feature no volcano, instead opting for a guitar-shaped hotel tower standing 700 feet tall.

CNN reports that the transition has forced the Mirage to lay off over 3,000 employees, taking effect in July, with Hard Rock paying over $80 million in severance.

“After 34 amazing years, The Mirage Hotel & Casino will be ceasing operations on July 17, 2024,” the Mirage said in a statement posted to social media. “Over the next two months we will bid farewell to this iconic and historic property and then we will commence an incredible transformation. We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation, and world-class hospitality.”
