Last week at the Adobe MAX 2023 conference, the software company debuted an eye-catching new piece of technology. Called Project Primrose, the new concept unveiled by Adobe can be summarized as a digital display combined with flexible fabric. At the conference, Adobe chose to present the new piece of tech as a wearable dress. Worn by Christine Dierk, who herself is part of the team that designed and developed the technology, Project Primrose is a fabric that can change color and display content developed by Adobe’s suite of software. The company summarizes the technology as “reflective light-diffuser modules for non-emissive flexible display systems.”

“Project Primrose, displayed at MAX as an interactive dress, makes this possible with wearable and flexible, non-emissive textiles which allow an entire surface to display content created with Adobe Firefly, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Stock, and Adobe Illustrator,” says Adobe.
The dress that was shown in the demo is made up of “sequins” that are actually reflective smart displays, and can animate in real time. The dress also incorporates sensors that can react to movement of the fabric. While the fabric was showcased in a wearable dress form, Project Primrose has implications across platforms, as the fabric can be leveraged for hospitality, advertising, education, and more.
