Savannah Sound(craft)As part of its $11 million restoration project, the Lucas Theatre in Savannah, Georgia, installed two Soundcraft consoles. The Lucas Theatre, formerly a movie and vaudeville venue, now hosts large theatrical productions and performances by people like Alison Krauss, Glen Campbell and John Prine. A new sound system was required as part of the building’s makeover. Executive director of the theater, Paul Couch, chose the Soundcraft Series FIVE for front-of-house (kept in the control booth on the balcony) and the SM20 for monitors (stored on a rolling console down on the stage) because of the great experience he’d had with Soundcraft products in the past. Proud of the theater’s transformation, Couch said, “My goal with this theater is to build a regional reputation as an outstanding performance venue, and, with our new system, we’ve made it as good as any production facility in the state.”The theater also uses Crown MA-2400 and MA-3600 amplifiers, JBL HLA 4895 three-way enclosures and loudspeakers, and 4897A dual 18-inch subwoofer cabinets. Some of the monitors are a combination of EAW models with Crown K Series amps.
Barco On Tour With U2During the ZooTV tour in 1992, rock group U2 made concert history by integrating 200 Barco video cubes into the presentation. In 1997, they used LED technology on the Popmart tour. And this year, U2 continues the tradition with high-tech video by using 400 square feet of Barco Daylight Display DLite Series LED videowalls, four high brightness ELM Series DLP™ projectors and six BarcoReality 9200 projectors on the Elevation World Tour.
The tour, which began on March 24 in Miami, will visit 34 cities in all, including Atlanta, Dallas, Denver and New York. High-end display technology supplier XL Video was chosen to provide the systems for the tour. Rene de Keyzer of XL said that, “the Barco LED videowalls are an incredibly reliable product…The decision to offer their product to our client U2 was an easy one.”
Barco products have a range of characteristics that may have influenced XL’s decision. The DLite Series provides light output of 5000 uniform NITs and wide viewing angles. The Extreme Light Machine Series projectors offer extreme brightness, rugged mechanical construction, and versatility. Visit Barco’s Web site for more information: www.barco.com.
