Associations Focus: NSCA Welcomes New Faces

NSCA ANNOUNCES NEW ADDITIONS TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
At its annual member meeting during InfoComm 08, NSCA appointed two new members to the association's board of directors. Dave Ferlino, president of VistaCom, and Michael Hester, managing partner of Beacon Communications, will each join the NSCA board for three-year terms.
Andy Musci, president of Altel Systems,took the helm as president of the NSCA board when Nancy Emerson, vice president of Vodaci Technologies, retired from the NSCA board in June.
Ron Pusey, president and CEO of Communications Specialists of Virginia, is now vice president of the NSCA board. Ingolf deJong, president and COO of General Communications, and Ray Bailey, president of Lone Star Communications, round out NSCA's executive committee.
“I'm enthused about this slate of dedicated and committed people,” Musci says. “We're excited to bring out new member benefits — including our new insurance program — that will enable our members to rise to the next level.”
NSCA UNVEILS WOMEN-IN-INDUSTRY INITIATIVE
In what she hoped would be the first of many such events, outgoing NSCA board President Nancy Emerson told attendees at a reception for women during InfoComm 08 that opportunities are abound for them in the commercial electronic systems industry.
“We often don't put a female face on the industry,” Emerson says. “There are many opportunities for women — whether that's pulling cable, doing project management, serving as sales reps, or becoming engineers. We're trying to bring some diversity to the field.”
Emerson says she hoped the reception would generate interest and increase networking channels for women. Plans are in the works for a similar event during NSCA TechWeek, sponsored by InfoComm, Oct. 20 to 24 in Dallas.
In conjunction with the initiative, NSCA plans to launch a listserv to promote discussion and a free exchange of information. The association encourages everyone in the industry to get involved and reach out to new women in the field.
HOW TO GROW YOUR DIGITAL-SIGNAGE BUSINESS USING MIB RESEARCH
Learning how to sell digital-signage systems, understanding digital-signage software, and calculating the cost and benefit of the market are the primary areas needed for success in the digital-signage industry, according to NSCA's third-quarter Market Intelligence Briefing (MIB), Digital Signage Trends in the Commercial Electronic Systems Industry.
More than 67 percent of systems contractors/integrators and 80 percent of independent technical/design consultants were involved in digital-signage projects last year. The survey indicated a growth rate of 45 percent for 2008.
Among other areas, the report details market demand, multiline channels involving digital signage, typical systems for display screens, obstacles to market involvement, and necessary skills and knowledge for increased participation in digital signage.
ONLINE A/E TOOLKIT UPDATED
NSCA added new content surrounding emerging digital-signage technology trends to its resource web portal, the A/E Toolkit. This online resource contains more than 300 articles on best practices.
“The AE Toolkit should be an essential resource for any NSCA member interested in improving their relationships with architects, engineers, and contractors in the industry,” says NSCA Executive Director Chuck Wilson.
