INFOCOMM BECOMES ANSI-ACCREDITED STANDARDS DEVELOPER

INFOCOMM SHINES

InfoComm Shines challenges members to work together to benefit nonprofit organizations and raise visibility and goodwill for the AV industry. In 2005, the initial InfoComm Shines project included the donation of nearly $100,000 in AV products and services to the Helen Keller National Center. In 2006, the headquarters of Southface, an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting environmentally friendly practices, was selected as an InfoComm Shines project.

Recently, the ICIF Board selected the Walker School in Needham, Mass., as its latest InfoComm Shines project. Recommended by Stewart B. Randall, CTS-D, of Communications Designs Associates, the Walker School is exploring potential uses of assistive communications technology for more effective classroom teaching of emotionally, behaviorally, and learning disabled children and youth in the classroom.

Through InfoComm Shines, the Walker School will create a web-based communications system for the Walker staff and families to use to conduct meetings, seminars, parental conferences, and staff supervision. This will involve the development of basic video and graphics production. The project will also increase and enhance the instructional technology available to teaching staff in the Walker School. This will involve a partnership with one or more local universities to employ graduate students to research and develop technology solutions for this population. During the study, various technologies will be employed for evaluation and testing with the possibility of being incorporated into the Walker curriculum. An arts and technology curriculum at Beacon High School will also be developed and implemented with support from the companies contributing to this project.

So far, Extron, Crestron, Polycom, HB Communications, Vbrick, AMX, FSR, and others have pledged their support. If you are interested in getting involved with this project, please contact Stewart B. Randall, CTS-D at srandall@cdaconsultants.com. If you are interested in submitting an InfoComm Shines project proposal, visit www.infocomm.org.

ICIF AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS

The International Communication Industries Foundation, the nonprofit foundation administered by InfoComm, has issued nearly $70,000 in scholarships for the 2008-2009 academic year. Twenty-three students who are employees or dependents of employees of InfoComm-member companies were awarded $1,500 each. Twenty-nine students who are outside the industry were awarded $1,200 each.

To be eligible for ICIF scholarships, students must be majoring in audiovisual subjects or related fields, including audio, video, telecommunications, electronics, technical aspects of the theater, data networking, software development, and information technology. Students with other majors may be considered if they can demonstrate a relationship to career goals in the AV industry.
