Panasonic's Versatile Hi-res Blu-ray Disc Player

Panasonic’s second-generation Blu-ray Disc player comes in at $599, pitting it against rival Sony’s second-gen standalone model introduced earlier in the year. The Panasonic DMP-BD10A supports 7-channel audio formats including Dolby True HD and dts-HD along with Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, and dts decoding. In addition to playing Blu-ray discs, including BD-J interactive material, the hi-res player spins CDs and standard DVDs. DVDs are upconverted automatically to 1080p via an HDMI connection. Under the hood, the player touts P4HD technology for exceptional detail, a 297MHz 14-bit video digital-to-analog converter, and video noise shaping that improves signal-to-noise ratios by shifting noise to an unused band. The player ships with five Blu-ray titles: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, The Transporter, Fantastic 4, and Crash.
