2006 CEDIA Electronic Lifestyles Winner
Designers' Awards: Large Home Theater
Gold Technical Design, Level III ($125,000-140,000)
The Home Theaters by Design project was a renovation to a lower-level playroom of their client's home. The Home Theaters by Design team is proud of the fact that all phases of the design, installation, and construction were completed by their company. All acoustical design and treatment, including all of the trim and millwork, were done inhouse. They worked very closely with the clients to design the room to meet their specific needs and tastes.
The one area that presented a challenge was the room's entrance. Home Theaters by Design felt it needed to be moved to a different wall to allow for better entry in and out of the room. By doing this, the team was able to create an equipment room behind the theater, and a better flow of traffic. They also paid special attention to the ceiling and lighting design for this space, and constructed a coffered ceiling to add an architectural detail to the room complete with acoustical treatments designed behind the ceiling medallions to help control the acoustics. The surround speakers were placed behind the acoustical panels to allow them to be placed properly with minimal intrusion into the room's decor. The control system operates a multi-zone lighting control complete with motion sensor as well as the room's electronic equipment.
The room was calibrated to THX audio specification using a Sencore SPL meter. Two HVAC inlet vents were used two allow a steady stream of air, minimizing the noise that a single vent with the same airflow would have yielded.
The video system was calibrated to ISF standards for one memory setting, as well as a client preference for a second memory setting. ISF calibration was done using the Sencore test equipment as well.
