Media Design Associates Inc.

The clients moved into a new two-year-old home that was supposed to have a dedicated theater already built out. What Media Design Associates Inc. found was a lot of wires in bundles and no electronics, as well as a big mess. In addition, there was a window in the room that had to be kept operable for fire codes. Another obstacle: the client realized that the air-conditioning system failed to cool the room sufficiently, which would be needed to house the electronics in the humid climate.

The design around the window was easily fixed by making that the back of the theater and placing a large velvet drape in front of it to give it the right effect. The equipment was put into a hidden wall next to the screen, with a mesh speaker covering so that it had room to breathe. In addition, Media Design Associates worked with a cooling contractor to add proper vents in the room and make them seamless to the design. The control system is a Crestron ST-1700C touchscreen and processor. It operates the lighting, DVD manager, TiVo, single-play DVD, cable, satellite, Arcam surround processor, the multi-format electronic masking on the screen, and more.

A separate HVAC system was installed specifically for the theater, which then provided ample ventilation. The Arcam AVP700 was chosen specifically for its ability to be able to calibrate acoustically for the clients audiophile taste. Revel speakers were chosen for their tonal qualities.

The theater was calibrated using the video essentials DVD. The theater was finished just before Thanksgiving, traditionally a holiday where the client hosts family and friends. They loved utilizing the theater so much, that they had a New Years party with their children and their children's friends and parents. Everyone loved the fact that the kids could all be having a great time at the movies, and the parents knew where they were.
