Designers Choice Awards: Best Overall, Media Room
Gold Technical Design
Hometronics’ client is the ultimate NBA fan. The install team was given the task of bringing the sights, sounds, and feelings of NBA action to life in his home. They converted one of his barns into the ultimate media room.
Based on the enormous size and scope of the space, Hometronics enlisted a world-renown acoustical and design firm and contracted the acoustic engineering teams at California Audio Technology (CAT) to place and manufacture each custom ultra-high-performance loudspeaker in the correct engineered locations in relationship to the listening environment and room shape. The Stewart screen was built into the corner of the space, where CAT custom manufactured loudspeakers (measuring 7ft.tall, 2000lb. each) with custom-angled enclosures that correctly performed and fit into the corner of the building structure. Four CAT 22in. and four CAT 12in. aluminum subwoofers were custom manufactured to accurately deliver the incredible amount of balanced bass to the 2500- square-foot sports oasis. A Runco MBX-1 projector was selected for its high resolution and light output so that the room’s lights could be up without compromising the image on the screen.
This sports paradise is a multimedia experience complete with over 20 plasma and LCD displays located in the media area, bar/kitchenette, bathrooms, billiard, and poker area. A motorized telescopic pole lowers from the ceiling allowing each player to watch their own screen. Backlit NBA team logos and game photography recreate the ambience of NBA arenas. Sports energy is transmitted to the enthusiasts through two D-Box motion platforms. Even the porch has a projector, motorized screen, and surround sound so you never miss the action. Three wireless touchpanels are kept in key areas to have easy access and control for any given area. Two totally populated Kaleidescape video servers allow over 1000 movies to be stored in full resolution. Video sources are routed through three stacked matrix switchers that send information to video processors and displays. Even the aroma of the NBA is present from a backlit display case featuring a collection of every Air Jordan produced by Nike and signed by Michael Jordan.
