Goral also points out that leveraging the IT network and Internet technology in the classroom are yielding interesting results. For example, he notes that Ball State University educator and EduComm presenter Sarah Robbins has taught classes within Second Life, a popular 3D online virtual world. "In Second Life, students create avatars that can meet and explore a certain location," Goral says. "In one assignment, Robbins wanted students to experience how it felt to be different. They had to go to a popular Second Life nightclub and try to interact, except their avatar was the shape of the Kool-Aid Man."

He also points to an educator at Drexel University who is studying how ecosystems work using Second Life. His virtual island, called Second Nature 3, looks at how an ecosystem reacts when new species are introduced.

New York Times technology columnist and CBS News correspondent David Pogue will also deliver his keynote at this year's EduComm. Last year, Pogue offered his view with a presentation called "5 Technologies for the Next 5 Years." In it, he discussed Voice over IP (VoIP), radio frequency identification (RFID), à la carte TV, high-definition video, and Web 2.0.

"The market potential for AV in education is still huge, with possibly 60 percent of the market untapped" says Kayye, who was the first keynote speaker when EduComm started five years ago. "The learning potential is just as big."

Attendees who register for the EduComm conference will also receive free access to InfoComm and NXTcomm.
