Calibre Shows Video Processors to U.S.

UK-based Calibre debuted several of its new format converters and synchronizers, scaler/switchers, and warp/blend processors for the U.S. market at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

Last week, UK-based Calibre debuted several of its new format converters and synchronizers, scaler/switchers, and warp/blend processors for the U.S. market at the NAB Show in Las Vegas.

The Calibre PVProHD-IW provides soft edge blending, warping, scaling, broadcast-grade de-interlacing, and noise reduction and image enhancement. Company officials say the PVProHD-IW is especially adept at warping projector images for display on non-traditional surfaces including extreme off-angle projection surfaces, curved screens, and unusual or non-geometric shapes. It recalculates warp parameters as required to suit input resolution changes, aspect ratio, height, width, and overscan adjustments without the need to load a separate warp map for each input configuration. Blending of multiple projectors is performed using Calibre's proprietary algorithms, which allow precise control of blend S-curve, gamma, and blend region width, according to the company, and can work on one to four blend regions per projector.

The system also provides black level correction with independent control of up to nine regions with 10-bit adjustment of granularity. Blend processing is 16-bit accurate for de-gamma, blend, black level correction, and re-gamma to ensure crisp, clean images without introduction of black level noise or grayscale banding, the company says. Setup is via a standard laptop or PC.

"Our flagship PVProHD products are already in use in a number of extremely high profile North American applications," said Tim Brooksbank, chairman at Calibre UK, in a statement.

Calibre also showed its new VideoExcel range of processors. The first VideoExcel processor, the VXL-100HD format converter, offers up/down/cross conversion from SD to HD, HD to SD, and HD to HD with frame synchronization and per-pixel motion adaptive processing and noise reduction.

Calibre officials say the VXL-75HD is a broadcast-grade computer graphics-to-video scan converter. It converts VESA or CEA computer digital or analog input formats to SMPTE HD or SD standards, and includes 3G-SDI output and Genlock.

The VXL-150HD combines the features of the 75HD and 100HD units and adds closed-caption processing and VITC time code support in a universal format and scan converter, with frame synchronization, noise reduction, and image enhancement in a single unit.
