Casio Shows off Laser/LED Projector

Casio has introduced a new slim projector it says makes a viable digital signage solution. The company's new Green Slim projector line features what Casio says is the world's first mercury-free laser and LED hybrid light source, which allows it to operate for up to 20,000 hours without constant maintenance.

Casio has introduced a new slim projector it says makes a viable digital signage solution. The company's new Green Slim projector line features what Casio says is the world's first mercury-free laser and LED hybrid light source, which allows it to operate for up to 20,000 hours without constant maintenance.

According to Casio, the Green Slim projectors use environmentally friendly semiconductor technology to deliver up to 2,500 lumens at significantly less cost than high-pressure mercury light sources and are still bright enough for projection in a well lit room.

By combining a laser, a fluorescent element, and an LED, Casio says it has created an original mercury-free hybrid light source capable of generating high brightness. Casio says it has achieved high brightness output of green light, which until now has been considered difficult with conventional semiconductor light sources, by efficiently converting blue laser light into green light using the fluorescent element. High-brightness light of 2,000 or more lumens is then attained by projecting blue laser light, green light converted from blue laser light with the fluorescent element, and light emitted by a red LED through a DLP chip onto the screen.

Company officials said Green Slim projectors offer mounting flexibility thanks to their solid-state design. The projectors can be rotated and mounted in any direction without impacting operation or lamp life, according to the company. The WXGA resolution models can be rotated 90 degrees, creating a portrait display.

"With a revolutionary light source, the Green Slim line is able to provide superior brightness and energy-saving features perfect for showcasing any message, anywhere," said Frank Romeo, vice president of Casio's Business Projector Division, in a statement.

Company officials said all Green Slim projectors feature quick startup and shutdown. The projector reaches its maximum brightness in about eight seconds and requires no cooling down period. Casio's hybrid light source projectors also feature a wide-angle 2x zoom, which boosts magnification to the highest level among data projector and delivers optimally sized images in large and small meeting settings. Green Slim projectors also automatically correct keystone distortions resulting from changes in projector positioning.

Casio's hybrid light sources projectors will be available in XGA and WXGA models. The lamp-free design is backed by a three-year warranty, including the light source. The projectors will ship in early April with a 2000-lumen XGA model listing for $799, according to the company.
