Q & A: Hanging a 42-inch Plasma Display

Q: I need to hang a 42-inch plasma display on a wall using a cantilevered mount. The wall is 5/8-inch sheetrock on metal studs. How can I be sure it will safely support the weight of the display (66 pounds)?
A: There are two ways to safely mount displays to these types of walls. 1) Locate the studs and pre-drill the holes to fit heavy-duty molly fittings. The weight class of the mollies needs to be greater than the display weight. Making sure the molly goes into the stud will ensure a safe installation. Do not use the screw type as these may pull out. 2) The best way is to remove the sheetrock from the area of the mount, install wood studs inside the metal studs, and then install a back-up plate of either 1/8-inch or heavier metal, or 1/2-inch-thick plywood. The wall can be patched with joint compound to match the existing wall. Mark the mount holes and install the mount. Either way will work well and safely.
