Control4 Takes Aim at Other Control Companies

Control4 may want to be the operating system of the home, but the control and automation company also has its sights set on other installations, for instance, hotels. So it's worth it for all AV installers to brush up on Control4 OS 2.0, showcased at CEDIA Expo in September.

Control4 may want to be the operating system of the home, but the control and automation company also has its sights set on other installations, for instance, hotels. So it's worth it for all AV installers to brush up on Control4 OS 2.0, showcased at CEDIA Expo in September. The new version has a Flash-based software development kit (SDK), which makes integration and design easy and more elegant; updated Navigator interfaces for touchscreen and on-screen (TV) devices; and now supports the wireless ZigBee Pro specification–including the Home Automation profile–so it's interoperable with more systems, including lighting, security, entertainment, and HVAC systems.

With the new SDK, third parties can develop applications that end users and integrators can add to Control4 systems. Company officials said during CEDIA Expo that these programs would form the basis of an Apple-style app store, a model Control4 has already introduced to hotels via its Suite Systems Concierge Service.
