Last week at Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas, LG Electronics introduced several firsts for the company, including a solid-state media player, a prototype display that uses ambient light to increase its brightness, and a 120-inch 2x2 plasma matrix.

Company officials said the new NC-1000 media player expands LG's digital signage offerings by introducing a hardware solution that is designed to easily display a wide variety of content including images, movies, audio, and other file types in full HD. The NC-1000 media player comes in a small format footprint and is capable of driving any LG commercial display. It uses a solid-state, open-architecture platform and is compatible with many popular digital signage software applications, according to the company.

For high ambient light environments, LG showed what it is calling "Shine Out" display technology. Using an anti-reflection surface treatment, the new displays can take sunlight and use it as an additional light source to actually the effective brightness of the display. At DSE, a side-by-side demonstration of a regular LG display next to a Shine Out display under direct lighting showed how "wash-out" could be visibly minimized using the latter technology, resulting in content that was more easily viewable.

Finally, LG demonstrated a new product that combines four 60-inch plasmas in a 2x2 matrix for a nearly seamless 120-inch HD display. Company officials said the display is versatile enough for a hospitality setting, shopping mall, exhibit, or public transportation venue for information sharing, advertising, or broadcasting in 1080p.

LG officials told PRO AV the 120-inch product would be sold as a single SKU.

"The need for compelling digital signage solutions across a variety of applications is vast," said Jeff Dowell, vice president of digital signage at LG Electronics, in a statement. "LG's monitors and media players bring simplicity back into the equation by adding value beyond just the display itself. This makes it easier to implement digital signage in any vertical market for a multidimensional and engaging approach to information sharing."
