All the world is a stage, and virtually every room in NYU Steinhardt School’s new James L. Dolan Recording and Teaching Complex can be a live recording environment—even the bathrooms. That’s because AV designer and acoustician Walters-Storyk Design Group, integrator Masque Sound, and architecture firm Gensler built the complex on a raised access computer floor, with integrated cable troughs and hatch doors to give faculty access to reconfigure any room as a recording room.
A purpose-built Ethernet network also connects the AV equipment, and Cat-6 runs to every AV panel provide Internet access and the ablity to control equipment throughout the building. The school includes New York City’s first Dangerous Music 10.2 surround-sound installation and a unique 3D audio research lab with a reconfigurable ceiling grid that can be fitted with a variety of speakers, microphones, and other equipment for creating diverse recording and playback applications. Creston control panels handle a variety of configuration chores, from access to 32 Lutron lighting control themes, to touchscreen control over six PTZ camera feeds, to combining a pair of 5.1 sound systems in the conference room into a 10.2 system by routing signals from a Yamaha DME64 digial mixing engine.
