2010 Judges' Award

Front-projecting onto a two-story Coke bottle isn't easy. AV integrator Dangers and its AV consultant hung projectors above the bottle, aimed down at a 40-degree angle. Don't try this without testing.

Erected for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Coca-Cola’s pavilion was anchored by a two-story Coke bottle that changed appearance based on events (it could turn gold, silver, or bronze as results were announced) and allowed visitors to manipulate bubbles, athlete icons, and waves of virtual liquid. The bottle’s diameter and materials ruled out rear-projection. Front-projection, which the team settled on, meant the risk of shadows from people standing in front of the bottle.

Through 3D modeling, the designers decided they would hang four Sanyo PLC-XP100 projectors above the bottle, in portrait mode, aimed at greater than a 40-degree angle. They used Image AnyPlace IA-100BEX processors for low-latency geometry correction and M1 Interactive’s Respondr reactive video system to make the bottle interactive. The integrator is quick to point out that most projector makers don’t recommend running their gear at such extreme angles. Only after testing did the team move forward—and the results were outstanding.
