The inaugural winner of the Spotlight Award for Best Residential Project is a stunning Greenwich, Conn., home with 14 TVs (including one in the garage), 31 AV zones, a 12-seat home theater with 132-inch Stewart Filmscreen projection screen, and a home office with its own Tandberg 6000 MXP videoconferencing system. Dubbed Classic Comforts, the new home includes $800,000 worth of technology. Being a place where people live as well as work and entertain, a lot of that technology is hidden. In the living room, a flat-panel TV lowers vertically out of the ceiling; in the master bedroom and home office, they rise on lifts from custom furniture. Late in the project, integrator Electronics Design Group (EDG) was asked to install a TV in a bathroom sauna. It did so by building a window into the wall of the sauna and placing the TV behind it in the already built locker roomthe TV is protected but still controllable using a waterproof remote.

The home theater, which wasn’t part of the original plan, required close collaboration among EDG, the home’s interior designer, and acousticians from RPG Diffusor Systems to maximize performance. The solution called for wood on the ceiling and fabric on the walls, with acoustical treatments hidden behind the fabric. An eye-catching wave design on the ceiling serves various acoustical functions, from eliminating direct reflections to providing mid-frequency diffusion based on the precise shape of the waves. The team built a curved ramp below the screen that matches the appearance of the ceiling waves and serves as a giant bass trap to absorb low-frequency energy in the room. When you’re using high-end gear such as a Runco VX-2IX projector, Genelec speakers, and a Lexicon MC-8 cinema processor, you don’t want the room to hold you back.
