AV Integrator • Design and Production

There are no second acts in life? F. Scott Fitzgerald should explain that to AV and museum exhibit integrator Design and Production (D&P), which, 23 years after first working on the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum, won the chance to overhaul it with 21st century technology. This time around, the company was tasked with creating “blockbuster” showpieces that make up the most interactive presidential library to date, as former First Lady Rosalynn Carter describes it.

The first blockbuster is the “Day in the Life” exhibit, which comprises six rear-projected portrait images, nestled between columns in a semicircular rotunda, and four horizontally mounted , 65-inch Sharp Electronics LCD displays. For the video portraits, D&P chose Digital Projection Titan 600 projectors because of their ability to mount in portrait mode without a mirror assembly. The second blockbuster, the “Waging Peace, Fighting Disease, and Building Hope” exhibit, is an interactive touchtable with six Digital Projection D-Visual projectors aimed down at a custom Corian tabletop with six embedded infrared touch frames (for more information, see www.proavmagazine.com/carter).

Overall, the museum includes 33 unique programs. Because the project was a retrofit, D&P started with a facility impact study to determine what might restrict or define systems development. (Power and signal distribution, for example, were designed to use existing floor distribution systems and overhead ceiling space.) Despite a sizable technology budget, D&P decided that centralized control of every single AV system wasn’t necessary. The majority of display systems and interactive computer stations were tied to controlled power and operated locally for looping or motion-activated playback. Larger presentation systems, such as “Day in the Life,” which employs 10 synchronized Adtec Digital Edje 4111 video servers, were networked back to a pair of control rooms and tied together using AMX NI3100 show controllers that also run a daily scheduler for monitoring the major exhibits. Speaking of scheduling, D&P nailed the ultimate deadline for completion: the former president’s 85th birthday, when the museum re-opened.
