Extron Electronics announced this week that two of its power amplifiers are the industry's first commercial amps to meet the new Energy Star Version 2.0 Audio/Video specification. The final Energy Star 2.0 for AV was launched officially last November.

Extron officials said the company's MPA 401 and XTRA Series of amplifiers have met the 2.0 standard. They comprise a complete family of mono, stereo, and multichannel power amplifiers for a wide range of applications from classrooms and boardrooms to multipurpose rooms, auditoriums, and open spaces, according to the company. The amps in the two lines draw less than 1 watt while in standby mode, and also offer low power consumption while idle and under load. Extron power amplifiers, because they come in compact, space-efficient enclosures that are ideal for installation in racks and lecterns, do not require fans for cooling.

"We are pleased to lead the way in the pro AV industry with the first Energy Star 2.0 qualified commercial amplifiers," said Casey Hall, Extron vice president of sales and marketing for North America, in a statement. "These amplifiers consume less energy, run cooler, and take up less space than competitive models."

Company officials said that in addition to energy efficiency, Extron power amplifiers are designed to deliver high-performance audio reproduction using Extron's exclusive Class D design and patented CDRS Class D Ripple Suppression technology. CDRS provides a smooth, clean audio waveform and an improvement in signal fidelity over conventional Class D amplifier designs, according to Extron.

The MPA 401 outputs 40 watts rms for 70 volt distributed speaker systems in classrooms and other similarly sized environments. For larger installations including lecture halls, divisible rooms, and retail spaces, the XTRA Series offers mono, stereo, and multi-channel amplifiers with 200 watts up to 800 watts rms output.
