Yamaha to Retire PM1D Console

Yamaha announced it would retire its PM1D digital mixing system after 10 years on the market. In 1999, the PM1D was the first of its kind from the company, having been designed specifically for live sound reinforcement, and made its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City on September 22 of that year.

Yamaha announced it would retire its PM1D digital mixing system after 10 years on the market. In 1999, the PM1D was the first of its kind from the company, having been designed specifically for live sound reinforcement, and made its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City on September 22 of that year.

According to Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, parent company Yamaha Corp. of Japan has reached the limit on availability of key components for manufacturing the console, forcing the company to cease production as of December 2009, in order to secure enough parts for future customer service. Current requests for PM1D systems will be fulfilled, and limited quantities will remain available until the existing stock is depleted, according to the company.

Yamaha has reportedly released a brief white paper that provides customers with its concept for the next generation Yamaha digital system platform.

"Yamaha Corp. Japan has been hard at work advancing the next generation digital system platform," said Larry Italia, vice president/general manager of Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, in a statement. "The PM1D was responsible for moving the commercial audio market forward, and as we begin this next ear, our goal is to continue to provide our customers with the tools that meet changing market demands well into the 21st century."
