WATCH: The first full-length music video created by AI

Video for "The Hardest Part" by Washed Out created completely through OpenAI's Sora technology

The longest video to be created exclusively using AI is the new music video for the song “The Hardest Part” by artist Washed Out. We’ve reported on the debut of OpenAI’s Sora, a generative AI program that is capable of creating some truly realistic footage from text prompts. According to record label Sub Pop, the music video represents “the first collaboration between a major music artist and filmmaker on a music video using OpenAI’s Sora.”  The video itself is jarring, and it is difficult to remember that the main couple featured throughout the video aren’t actors at all; they are completely generated by the technology.

In an interview with the Los Angeles times, video director Paul Trillo explains that while he doesn’t think generative AI should be the only tool used by creatives, it does have its benefits and use cases. While Sora is not yet publicly available, Trillo was one of the creative artists granted early access.

“A lot of music videos just don’t have the budgets to really dream big,” Trillo told the Los Angeles Times. “I think AI can help the music industry in terms of creating things that even [Washed Out] could dream of that maybe he wouldn’t have dared to dream before.”

According to Trillo, the video is made up of 55 shots created in Sora and edited together in Adobe Premiere Pro with “very minor touch-ups.”
