The one-of-a-kind Endovascular Center at the Methodist Hospital of Houston recently received new audio, video, and conferencing systems in the Burge Conference Room installed by systems integrator Ford Audio-Video. With a host of vascular and neurological doctors who provide the latest in medical procedures, Methodist Hospital called upon FAV to install systems that could accommodate the center's superior capabilities.

The primary feature of the conference room is the video imaging system, which utilizes a ceiling-mounted projector designed specifically for use in a medical environment. It employs an auto-calibration system to maintain the brightness, contrast, and colors of the image to the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) standard for medical imaging while projecting the image onto a 72-inch, low-gain screen. Up to four separate images can be simultaneously cast on the screen, including high quality x-rays from the procedure room, the hospital's cable TV system, DVD presentations, and VHS programs. The images can also be sent during a videoconference and recorded to DVD for later viewing. In addition, this system includes a black-and-white medical imaging LCD display.

The videoconferencing system includes three cameras, seven table-mounted microphones for use by the participants, and a wireless microphone system with handheld and lapel mics. Participants in the conference can be heard over six ceiling speakers while two program speakers mounted behind the projection screen provide sound from the cable TV system, DVD, and VCR players.

The existing system, which linked the medical procedure rooms, radiology department, medical director's office, and Blackwell Library, was upgraded to allow a bi-directional and seamless link to the Burge Conference Room. This permits the existing systems to send up to four images, including audio, to the new system, while allowing the new system to send up to three images plus audio to the existing system.
