From stadiums to airports to classrooms and office buildings, Atlas Sound is transforming listening experiences all over the world. In late October, Atlas Sound took the sanctuary at Northern Hills Community Church in Phoenix, AZ and changed it from a conventional weekly gathering place to a sonically accurate and aesthetically pleasing house of worship all by adding a few Atlas Sound SM12CXT high performance loudspeakers.

NHCC, a relatively small church nestled in north central Phoenix, caters to a congregation of about 250. The church offers three services each Sunday, one traditional and two contemporary; the contemporary offering a full complement of instruments including bass guitar, drums, synthesizers, guitar and vocals. The previous system in the sanctuary, consisting of three large format trapezoid boxes, left much to be desired. Laden with directivity challenges, the sound often splashed against the back walls and reflected off the ceiling of the sanctuary creating hot spots and dead zones translating into less than desirable intelligibility and an inaccurate musical experience.

Three Atlas Sound SM12CXTs were used to resolve the issue. The smaller footprint of the speaker allowed for better positioning which directed the coverage pattern of the sound to the seating area rather than the walls of the sanctuary while also providing a great improvement in the aesthetics. The installers utilized the speaker’s Omnimount™ capability by using the inserts on the tops of the cabinets (also included on the backs and bottoms) and ran them on 8 ohm mode off of two amplifier channels; center speaker off channel one, L/R off channel two. “We get all kinds of comments about the improved intelligibility and reproduction of spoken word from this system,” says Steve Young, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Atlas Sound. “The system performs way beyond even our expectations. It really sounds sweet in there.”

SM Series loudspeakers offer the quality sound reproduction and contemporary styling that made them perfect for this application. The SM12CXT features the 12CXT60—a 250 watt loudspeaker that combines a 12" diameter, low frequency transducer and a 1" exit, compression driver coupled to a 90 degree conical horn. The speaker has a curvlilinear, treated-paper cone for lower harmonic distortion, and a built-in crossover network for proper frequency transition between the two reproducers. The low frequency transducer and the high frequency driver feature permanently aligned voice coils for low distortion performance. All this translates into a wonderfully accurate and intelligible worship experience for all who attend.

“Everyone really likes the install,” Young continues. “I was pleased with the way it came back musically, and the intelligibility is noticeably improved. It’s a great enhancement of everything including the aesthetics.”
