Yamaha VS6 Speaker

The VS series can be used in both 70V and 100V distributed audio systems, with multiple transformer taps available to arrive at the appropriate power to the system. Additionally, an 8Ω tap is available for use in that type of system. The VS6 can handle a maximum of 100W, and its 1W/1m sensitivity is rated at 90dB SPL, and maximum SPL is calculated at 110dB SPL at 1m with 100W. These speakers are not intended to deliver high levels of SPL; they’re intended to provide clear, reliable audio in public address, background music, and other such applications. The published -10dB frequency range is 80Hz-20kHz, and the coverage pattern of the speaker is 90 by 90 degrees. I like the electrical connections sported by these speakers: two pairs of barrier strips, parallel-wired. This makes it a lot easier to wire these with other speakers. This facilitates a multi-speaker distributed audio system, and the speakers are intended for use in 70V systems—with transformer taps at 25W, 12.5W, 6.3W, 3.1W—and also 100V systems—with transformer taps for 25W, 12.5W, and 6.3W. The speaker also features power limiting to protect the LF driver. I like this a lot for applications where there is no sophisticated signal processor with its own limiter feeding the speakers; it prevents non-professionals from blowing out drivers. There is no magnetic shielding in these speakers, so they’re not intended for use in proximity to television monitors.

As to the audio quality of the speakers, they serve their intended purpose well. Obviously, with LF drivers of only 6.5in. in diameter, these speakers do not shake the room with low end. I introduced a subwoofer and discovered that even a modest ceiling-mounted sub can make the necessary difference. Also, the use of EQ and dynamics processing in a moderately sophisticated processor could facilitate the delivery of a little more low end; I listened to a completely flat and uncompressed signal throughout my subjective evaluation process. The mids are not even the tiniest bit honky and are not overly pronounced as they can be sometimes in speakers of this size. The HF drivers in these speakers are quite good, and they do sound a bit exaggerated to my ear, but I don’t have a problem with that. In my estimation, speakers that are used for paging and public address applications should boost the high and high mid frequencies so as to increase intelligibility. When the quality of the HF driver is good, that boost makes for a pleasant listening experience.

Yamaha has introduced a very good product in the VS series, particularly considering the price. The fidelity is good, despite the expected lack of thump in the low end. I’m also very pleased with the conventions that make the speaker useful in commercial applications, including the water resistance. Many contractors will please their clients with these, delivering Yamaha quality at a very reasonable price.
