The London Underground caters to approximately 1 billion passenger journeys per year, demanding an absolutely effective and tightly managed transport system.

The continued increase in the number of passengers and growing need for the effective control and management of trains has led the Underground to develop a plan for the enhancement of two primary lines, Jubilee and Northern, otherwise referred to as the JNUP Project.

The JNUP Project consists of a massive improvement program committing more than 8 billion (USD) by 2011.

One of the primary objectives is to modernize the rail system by implementation of new signal systems and control centers to enable enhanced efficiency and increased performance. These efforts will allow for automated (or “driverless”) train control that will result in a reduced waiting time between trains and increased revenue production.

Alcatel was selected to implement various portions of the JNUP Project. As part of this initiative, Opticomm series FMV-100K, a high-grade optical transmission system, was selected to handle the optical transport of signals to and from the trains within the framework of the automated train control system deployed by Alcatel.

The Opticomm FMV-100K system was selected and designed to ensure optimal performance standards. The system offers a particularly wide optical dynamic range, an MTBF in excess of 400,000 hours, and was successfully tested to confirm satisfaction with the high standards set for the project, including an exceptionally wide temperature range and other pertinent environmental conditions.
